How To Fight Past Imposter Syndrome

Being a creative entrepreneur means that you are putting yourself out there in a great way. Many times, this can lead to feelings of inadequacy, nervousness and unsure how to fight past imposter syndrome. So often we focus on our weaknesses instead of our strengths. It seems easier to try to focus on the areas that need to get better in and often, we end up getting stuck there. Therefore, Imposter Syndrome is real for many entrepreneurs and very hard to work through.

How To Fight Past Imposter Syndrome

In last week’s Stellar Mid-Week, I started a conversation about Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome can be defined as “a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success. ” When you are working inside your weaknesses, it’s easier to slip into feeling like a fraud. You feel that way NOT because it’s true, but because you are less confident when you are working to your weaknesses. When you’re playing to your strengths, your confidence will go up. You can also read more about what Imposter Syndrome is at this blog post that I wrote. Today, I want to share how to fight past imposter syndrome as a creative entrepreneur.

How To Fight Past Imposter Syndrome

1. Cultivate Confidence By Leveraging Your Strengths

Focusing on your strengths doesn’t mean that you don’t work on self improvement still. It doesn’t mean that you forsake your weaknesses and never grow in those areas. It means that you are aware of what it is that you ARE good at, and you’re committing to doing more of that. You might still have moments when imposter syndrome starts to creep in, but it’s a little easier to combat because your confidence can shine through.

2. Accept That You Can’t Know Everything

There is no possible way that you can know every single thing there is to know. No one can. You will have strengths and weaknesses, and there’s no way around that. There will be many brilliant things that you CAN do! But, we all have weaknesses and areas to improve in. It doesn’t make you a fraud, it means that you are a human!

3. Practice Gratitude

When you practice gratitude daily, you are actively choosing thankfulness for what you do have. Have you ever reflected on the strengths that you possess and just felt truly thankful for them? Taking time to be thankful will help shift your heart to see that what you currently have is really meaningful.

4. Delegate

Team work makes the dream work. If you have areas of your business that aren’t your favorite, consider delegating them out. Your weaknesses are someone else’s strengths! Plus, it will free you up to be able to focus more on your own strengths. If your entire team is playing to their strengths, your business and vision will be unstoppable!

5. Get Rid Of Perfectionism

Be comfortable in the knowledge that the world is full of uncertainty and many things will be beyond your control. Let go of the word perfect. Building a business and life you desire can be messy in the process. It’s ok for it to be this way. Try to let go of clinging tightly to your ideals and give space for authenticity. Nothing will ever be completely perfect. The harder you try to make it so, the harder it will be to grow an abundance.

Building your life as an entrepreneur should be fun most of the time. When you are truly playing to your strengths, Imposter Syndrome has to take a back seat. When your weaknesses are shining through, it would make sense as to why your confidence is low. Reevaluate how you’re building your business. Three questions to ask:

  • Are you operating inside your true strengths?
  • Do you focus on those or are you highlighting your weaknesses?
  • What strengths can you zero in on more?

In conclusion, Imposter Syndrome is very real and can be challenging to get rid of.

Practice gratitude and lean into your strengths more than your weaknesses. Those little voices might not ever totally go away, but they will dim. You will learn to recognize them and can work to silence them quickly. If you feel stuck, keep this list handy so you can make sure that you’re on track. It can help you fight how to fight imposter syndrome as it creeps up.

It’s a crazy time in our world and could be easy to wonder what it is that you have to offer. Stay centered in who you are and know that you have so much to offer this world. The world needs you now more than ever, and you CAN fight the little voices telling you that you are unqualified to do this. You have what it takes; just don’t give up!

Make every day stellar!
