I’ve spent most of my life with really giant dreams and goals, with the drive to achieve them, but underneath it all feeling totally and completely unqualified. I would often wonder if people could just see straight through me. I’ve heard the quote, “God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.” And I agree that he gives us everything we need to fulfill his purposes and that he will equip us every step of the way. But with each and every step I would take, I would often ask myself, “Why do I think that I’m the one to do this? What’s so great about me? Doesn’t everyone see straight through me?”
The truth is, I am not more or less qualified than you to chase your dreams, but living inside of wondering and feeling like a fraud is a lie. We have ALL been created with our own unique greatness. We have been designed with different life callings and purposes. But even if you don’t feel completely qualified to step into what your heart desires, it doesn’t mean you’re a fraud. It likely means you have work to do and the only way to get better is to get started.
If you’re believing that you’re not qualified to lead the dreams of your life, I want to remind you that you are believing a lie. You were created with your desires, gifts, passions and dreams and you have everything within you to achieve them. No one is an expert at the beginning or in the middle. It takes starting, being consistent, working on your mindset and never giving up! You have more than what it takes to impact the world inside of who you already are. If you have dreams to change the world and to lead others to do the same, then you can do it!
A few things that have helped me get through feelings of feeling unqualified are:
- Therapy
- Being willing to start anyway
- Humbly committing to always learning and growing
- Fighting for a positive mindset every single day
- Affirmations and speaking them out out loud until you begin to believe them
- Commit to not allowing the lies to win and recognizing that they are lies
- Don’t discount YOUR story
This is an area I still fight through today. I often ask myself why I would think that I am one that can encourage people. I remind myself that it’s the desire of my whole heart for a reason and that I DO have advice to speak to about what I’m passionate about. I’m qualified simply because I’m ME and because I have a heart to help people. Everything else I can figure out as I go.
I am not a fraud because I am a human who’s willing to show up and make my dreams come true. I am also willing to help YOU make your dreams come true, too! This is the same for you. You are qualified simply because you are you, and no one can take on your God given talents and callings the ways that you can.
