First, let’s start by defining exactly what self sabotage is. Self sabotage is what people do (or don’t do) that blocks their success. It prevents them from achieving their goals. This can happen consciously or unconsciously and can make goal setting and working really hard. It’s challenging to set goals and to feel like you can’t ever achieve them. In today’s blog post, I am going to be sharing a few Reasons You Might Be Sabotaging Yourself.

Reasons You Might Be Sabotaging Yourself
1. You don’t believe you deserve better.
Belief is half the battle. Actually, it’s most of the battle. When you don’t believe that you deserve better than where you currently are, it’s hard to make progress. In Hal Elrod’s book, The Miracle Equation, he talks about how unwavering faith is the first step. When you have unwavering faith, you have to believe in yourself on some level. When you don’t, taking inspired action will be a continued challenge.
2. You struggle to understand what you need or want.
When you don’t know what you need or want, you’ll do nothing but spin in circles. Second guessing what you need or want is also a form of self sabotage. Not allowing yourself to truly decide where it is you want to go, renders you immovable. Try to really nail down what it is that you need or want. Be honest with yourself. Then, you can truly begin to take steps forward.
3. You are focusing on instant gratification.
Instant gratification rarely comes quickly when you are chasing your goals. In fact, when results don’t happen quickly it’s easy to slip into a negative mindset. Nothing sabotages you more than a negative mindset. So, realize that you are in this for the long haul, that your dreams matter and you CAN do it. No matter how long it takes!
4. You have seen self sabotage modeled in your family.
It’s easy to repeat something that we’ve seen modeled for so long. Especially when we were in our very formative years. The truth is, you can’t change the past. But, the past can be a great teacher. Even in the things that we don’t want to model or didn’t enjoy about our past, we can learn from it. And when we learn from it, we have choices. To either duplicate them or model something different for our families. See, you can change the patterns of your family with work and dedication.
5. You are afraid of failure or rejection.
No one likes to fail or be rejected. However, when you’re afraid of it, it can freeze you up. Sometimes it’s easier to do nothing than to step into the pond and fear being rejected. However, all you’re doing is sabotaging yourself. If accomplishing your dreams is possible for one person, it’s possible for all. And, that includes you! Rejection might happen and on some level, it’s inevitable. But, don’t let it stop you from chasing your dreams.
6. You feel more in control engaging with familiar patterns, even if they are harmful.
Sometimes, when we set out to try something new, our brains will do everything possible to keep us “safe”. Meaning, engaging in familiar patters is what your brain knows and understand. Even if these patterns are harmful, they feel more comfortable than stepping out into new territory. Plus, it tends to give a sense of control. The problem with this is that old patterns don’t tend to help us grow. In order to grow, you have to try new things. Getting out of your comfort zone might feel scary. But, eventually you will adapt and that’s how we grow.
In conclusion, give yourself a chance to grow! Fight against self sabotage by recognizing when you’re slipping into bad habits. Push yourself out into new things as you chase your dreams. And, reach out for help by asking for accountability with a good friend to keep you on track.
